Hymn Suggestions for Lectionary Year A

The First Sunday of Advent
Isaiah 2:1-5 Alleluia, sing to Jesus
And every one 'neath their vine
Be our light in the darkness
Behold the mountain of the Lord
Christ is the world's true Light
Creator of the earth and sky
Creator of the starry height
Crown him with many crowns
Dona nobis pacem
For the healing of the nations
Glorious things of thee are spoken
God, as with silent hearts we bring to mind
God of grace and God of glory
How bright appears the Morning Star
Immortal, invisible, God only wise
In suffering love the thread of life
Jesus shall reign where'er the sun
Judge eternal, throned in splendour
Let there be light
Light one candle for hope
Love divine, all loves excelling
O day of God, draw nigh
O day of peace
O Lord, the clouds are gathering
O praise the gracious power
Rejoice, o land, in God thy might
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
Thy kingdom come, O God
Thy Kingdom come! on bended knee
Psalm 122 All people that on earth do dwell
Dear Shepherd of thy people, hear
Dona nobis pacem
How good is the God we adore
I joyed when to the house of God
Jerusalem the golden
O day of God, draw nigh
O day of peace that dimly shines
Pray that Jerusalem may have
Sweet is the solemn voice that calls
They did not build in vain
Unto thy temple, Lord, we come
When we to cleansing waters came
Romans 13:11-14 Awake, awake, fling off the night
Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Awake, my soul, stretch every nerve
Awake, O sleeper, rise from death
Awake, thou Spirit of the watchmen
Be our light in the darkness
Dear Lord and Father of mankind
Eternal Father, Lord of space
Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round
First of the week and finest day
Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go
God has spoken to his people, alleluia
Great God, your Spirit, like the wind
Hark, a herald voice is calling
Hark, a thrilling voice is sounding
Jesus came, the heavens adoring
Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts
Lord, save thy world
Nearer, my God, to thee
Now let us from this table rise
Not for tongues of heaven's angels
O heavenly word of God on high
Oft in danger, oft in woe
Sleepers, wake, a voice astounds us
Soldiers of Christ, arise
Stand up, stand up for Jesus
Thy strong word did cleave the darkness
Wake, awake, for night is flying
Wake up, O people
What does the Lord require
We shall stay awake
You call us, Lord, to be
Matthew 24:36-44 Awake, awake: fling off the night!

Hark, what a sound, and too divine
Herald, sound the note of judgment
Jesus came, the heavens adoring
Let all mortal flesh keep silence
Lo, he comes with clouds descending
Lord Jesus, think on me
O day of God, draw nigh
O quickly come, dread Judge of all
Rejoice, rejoice, believers
Sleepers, wake, a voice astounds us
The advent of our God

The people that in darkness sat
The race that long in darkness pined
There's a light upon the mountains
Thou, whose almighty word
Wake, awake, for night is flying
Who would think
Psalm 72 All hail the power of Jesus' name
Behold, the Saviour of the nations
Come, bless the Lord, God of our forebears
Earth has many a noble city
From the eastern mountains
Give to our God immortal praise
Hail to the Lord's Anointed
Jesus shall reign where'er the sun
O day of God, draw nigh
Revive thy work, O Lord
The Lord will come and not be slow
Thy Kingdom come! on bended knee
When morning gilds the skies
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
Ephesians 3:1-12 All hail the power of Jesus' name
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
Blessed assurance
Blessed Jesus, at thy word
Can we by searching find out God
Christ is the heavenly food that gives
Draw the circle wide
Eternal God, your love's tremendous glory
Filled with the Spirit's power
From all that dwell below the skies
Give thanks with a grateful heart
God is working his purpose out
God sends a rainbow
Hail, thou source of every blessing
Have faith in God, my heart
High let us swell our tuneful notes
How deep the riches of our God
In Christ there is no East or West
Jesus, come, for we invite you
Joy to the world! The Lord is come
Let earth and heaven combine
Make me a captive, Lord
Many and great, O God, are thy works
Now, my tongue, the mystery telling
Now to the Lord a noble song
O Christ the same, through all our story's pages
Our God, to whom we turn
Sing a new song, sing a new song
Sing choirs of heaven! Let saints and angels sing!
Sing praises old and new
There is a Redeemer
Wise men, they came to look for wisdom
You call us out to praise you
Matthew 2:1-12 All my heart this night rejoices
All poor men and humble
Angel-voices, ever singing
Angels, from the realms of glory
As with gladness men of old
Behold, the great Creator makes
Bethlehem, of noblest cities
Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning
Child of the stable's secret birth
Cloth for the cradle
Come and join the celebration
Come, your hearts and voices raising
Duérmete, Niño lindo
Earth has many a noble city
Every star shall sing a carol
Father eternal, ruler of creation
Funny kind of night
God, your glory we have seen in your Son
Good Christian men, rejoice
Hail, thou source of every blessing
Holy Child, how still you lie
How bright appears the Morning Star
In the bleak midwinter
Jesus, good above all other
Let earth and heaven combine
Lord, when the wise men came from far
Lord, who left the highest heaven
Love came down at Christmas
No crowded eastern street
Now the silence
O come, all ye faithful
O little town of Bethlehem
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
On this day earth shall ring
Once in royal David's city
Shepherds came, their praises bringing
Sleep, sweet child, thy mother watches
Songs of thankfulness and praise
The first Nowell the angel did say
The Virgin Mary had a baby boy
The wise may bring their learning
To us a Child of royal birth
Twas in the moon of wintertime
Unto us a boy is born
We three kings of Orient are
What child is this, who, laid to rest
What star is this, with beams so bright
When Christ's appearing was made known
When God Almighty came to be one of us
When our God came to earth
Where is this stupendous stranger?
Who are these eastern strangers?
Why, impious Herod, should'st thou fear
Wise men of old came seeking
Wise men, seeking Jesus
Wise men, they came to look for wisdom
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness

The First Sunday after Epiphany
The Baptism of Christ
Isaiah 42:1-9 All hail the power of Jesus' name
Almighty God, lift up our eyes
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Blessed be the God of Israel (Quinn)

Blessed be the God of Israel (Perry)
Breathe on me, Breath of God
Faithful vigil ended
God is here; as we his people
God's Spirit, as a rising gale
Hark the glad sound! the Saviour comes
Here in this place new light is streaming
I'll praise my Maker while I've breath
Jesus shall reign where'er the sun
Jesus, the name high over all
Let streams of living justice
Lord, let your servant go in peace
Loving Spirit, loving Spirit
Make way, make way for Christ the King
My heart and voice I raise
O Breath of Life, come sweeping through us
O for a thousand tongues to sing
The Church of Christ in every age
The people that in darkness walked
The race that long in darkness pined
The voice of God goes out to all the world
Thy strong word did cleave the darkness
To the Name of our salvation
When my lip confesses
When the Lord brought back
Will you come and follow me?
With joy we meditate the grace
You are salt for the earth
You call us, Lord, to be
Psalm 29 Creating God, your fingers trace
Eternal Father, strong to save
Fill thou my life, O Lord my God
I greet thee, who my sure Redeemer art
I greet you, my Redeemer sure, who lives
Let us with a gladsome mind
Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour
O give the Lord, you children of God
O worship the King all glorious above
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
Praise, O praise our God and King
The God of heaven thunders
The kingdom of God is justice and joy
When the morning stars together
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
You are holy, you are whole
Yours the hand that made creation
Acts 10:34-43 A man there lived in Galilee
All hail the power of Jesus' name
All who believe and are baptized
All who love and serve your city
Alleluia, glory to God
As Jacob with travel was weary one day
Awake, awake: fling off the night!
Christ who knows all his sheep
Come, all who look to Christ today
Come and journey with a Saviour
Crown him with many crowns
Draw the circle wide
Eternal God, your love's tremendous glory
Filled with the Spirit's power
Fold to your heart your sister and your brother
God forgave my sin in Jesus' name
Hail, thou once-despised Jesus
I believe in Jesus
In Christ there is no East or West
Jesus is Lord
Lord, we hear your word with gladness
My God, accept my heart this day
Name of all majesty
Not far beyond the sea, nor high
O Spirit of the living God
O what a gift, what a wonderful gift
Once in royal David's city
One bread, one body, one Lord of all
Send forth the gospel! Let it run
Sing praise to God on mountain tops
Songs of thankfulness and praise
Spirit of God, unleashed on earth
The Church's one foundation
They that believe and are baptized
To God be the glory, great things he has done
The voice of God goes out to all the world
We believe in God the Father
We have a Gospel to proclaim
Wind upon the waters
Matthew 3:13-17 Baptized in water
Christ, when for us you were baptized
Come, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove
Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove
Crashing waters at creation
Crown him with many crowns
Descend, O Spirit, purging flame
Down Galilee's slow roadways
From God Christ's deity came forth
God's Spirit as a rising gale
I bind unto myself today
I come, the great Redeemer cries
Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
Like the murmur of the dove's song
Mark how the Lamb of God's self-offering
My God, accept my heart this day
Never in all human story
Now is eternal life
O gladsome light, O grace
O King enthroned on high
O Laughing Light, O first born of creation
O Light, whose splendour thrills
O Lord Jesus Marrkapmirr
O love, how deep, how broad, how high
O Spirit of the living God
O thou who camest from above
On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry
She comes sailing on the wind
Sing of God made manifest
Sing praise to our Creator
Songs of thankfulness and praise
Spirit divine, attend our prayers
Spirit of God, unseen as the wind
The sinless one to Jordan came
Thou, whose almighty Word
To God be the glory
To the Name of our salvation
What king would wade
When Christ's appearing was made known
When God Almighty came to be one of us
When Jesus came to Jordan
When Jesus went to Jordan's stream

Take up thy cross, the Saviour said
The King of glory comes, the nation rejoices

Teach us how grave a thing it is
The glory of these forty days
General Hymns on the beginning of Lent: A spendthrift Lover is the Lord
Almighty Lord Most High draw near
Approach, my soul, the mercy-seat
Awake, my soul, and with the sun

Creator of the earth and skies
Dear Lord and Father of mankind
Eternal Lord of love, behold your Church
Father of heaven, whose love profound
Forgive our sins as we forgive
Forty days and forty nights
From deepest woe I cry to thee
Great Shepherd of thy people, hear
He who would valiant be
Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face
How can we sing with joy to God
I am trusting thee, Lord Jesus
Just as I am, without one plea
Lord, as I wake, I turn to you
Lord Jesus, think on me
Lord, who throughout these forty days
Now let us all with one accord
O for a heart to praise my God

Up to those bright and gladsome hills

The great Creator of the worlds
The great love of God
The sounds in God's world all agree
There is a green hill far away
There's a wideness in God's mercy

To Christ, the Prince of Peace
To God be the glory, great things he has done
Wash, O God, our sons and daughters
We all believe in God who made
We give immortal praise

My Jesus, my Saviour, Lord
Not far beyond the sea, nor high
O God of love, whose heart is ever yearning

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy
Love divine, all loves excelling
May the mind of Christ my Saviour
Morning glory, starlit sky
My faith looks up to thee
My God, I love thee; not because
My song is love unknown
No weight of gold or silver
Not for tongues of heaven's angels
Not what these hands have done
O dearest Jesus, why aren't you acquitted
O Holy Spirit, enter in
O how joyfully, O how hopefully
O love divine, how sweet thou art
O love, how deep, how broad, how high

God, your glory we have seen in your Son
Have you heard the raindrops
He comes to us as one unknown
Holy Spirit, Truth divine

Here hangs a man discarded
I danced in the morning
In the Cross of Christ I glory
In the Lord's atoning grief
It is a thing most wonderful
Let thy Blood in mercy poured
Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us
Lord, teach us how to pray aright
Man more than man
My God, I love thee, not because
My Lord, what love is this
My song is love unknown
Nature with open volume stands
O dearest Jesus, why aren't you acquitted
O dearest Lord, thy sacred head
O sacred head, surrounded
Praise to the Holiest in the height
See, world, your life suspended
Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle
Sunset to sunrise changes now
Take up thy cross, the Saviour said
The flaming banners of our King
The royal banners forward go
There is a green hill far away
They crucified my Saviour
Thy way, not mine, O Lord
'Tis finished! The Messiah dies
To mock your reign, O dearest Lord
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
When his time was over, the palms lay where they fell
When I survey the wondrous Cross
Would you share Christ's passion?
You have passed by
General Hymns Great Son of God

The Great Vigil of Easter
The New Testament readings should be preceded by a minimum of three Old Testament readings. The Exodus reading and canticle are always used. Hymn suggestions are given below, but the service should avoid the feeling of a lessons & carols service. A mixture of psalms sung by congregation, choir and choir with congregation should be offered, with an occasional hymn possibly taking the place of the psalms. The hymns given after the New Testament lessons are for use as a Gradual/Sequence Hymn or after the Gospel has been proclaimed.

Not far beyond the sea, nor high
O God of Bethel, by whose hand
O God of font and altar
O Lord of life, where'er they be
O praise the gracious power
O praise ye the Lord! praise him in the height
On this day, the first of days
People of God, arise
Praise the Lord through every nation
Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
Set your troubled hearts at rest
Sing and be glad, for this is God's house!
Splendour and honor, majesty and power
The Church's one foundation
The King of love my Shepherd is
The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want
They did not build in vain
Thine for ever! God of love
Thou art the way: to thee alone
Wash, O God, our sons and daughters
We are not our own
We the Lord's people,. heart and voice uniting
When Jesus taught by Galilee
Who are we who stand and sing
Ye that know the Lord is gracious
You call us, Lord, to be

Hymns appropriate to Acts and Rogationtide:
All my hope on God is founded
All things bright and beautiful
As those of old their first fruits brought
Bread of heaven, on thee we feed
Creating God, your fingers trace
For the beauty of the earth
For the fruits of his creation
God moves in a mysterious way
God of light and life's creation
God of mercy, God of grace
God, the source and goal of being
God whose farm is all creation
Great is thy faithfulness
I know that my Redeemer lives
I sing the almighty power of God
I, the Lord of sea and sky
Jesus, where'er thy people meet
Lord of the changing year
Lord, you need no house
Lord of beauty, thine the splendour
Many and great, O God, are thy works
Morning has broken
O God of Bethel, by whose hand
O Jesus, crowned with all renown
O Lord of every shining constellation
O Lord of heaven and earth and sea
O worship the King all glorious above
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Rejoice, O land, in God thy might
The spacious firmament on high
There is a Redeemer
This is my Father's world
We plough the fields, and scatter
We sing of God, the mighty source
Othe Hymns:
Alleluia, sing to Jesus
Beloved, let us love: love is of God
Come down, O Love divine
Come, light of the world
Come, thou everlasting Spirit

Bread of the world, in mercy broken
Broken for me, broken for you
By Christ redeemed
Christians, lift up your hearts
Christ is atonement, the Paschal Victim
Come, let us eat
Come with us, O blessed Jesus
Completed, Lord, the Holy Mysteries
Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness
Draw nigh and take the Body of the Lord
Eat this bread, drink this cup
Father, we thank thee, who hast planted
For the bread which you have broken
Gather around, for the table is spread
God of all time, all seasons of our living
He gave his life in selfless love
Here, Lord, we take the broken bread
Humbly I adore thee, Verity unseen
I am the bread, the bread of life
I come with joy, to meet my Lord

Jesus, our Master, on the night that they came
Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts
Let us break bread together
Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour

Now, my tongue, the mystery telling
Now the silence

O food of men wayfaring
O God, unseen, yet ever near
O Lord, sustaining all who live
O saving Victim, opening wide
O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray
Once, only once, and once for all
One bread, one body
See the holy table spread for our healing
Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless
Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands

To you, O kindly Jesus Christ
We come as guests invited
We come to this your table, Lord

Help us to help each other, Lord
Holy Spirit, come, confirm us
Holy Spirit, come with power
How the world longs for your birth
Jesus, priceless treasure
Let every Christian pray
Light of the lonely pilgrim's heart
Light's abode, celestial Salem
Lord, bring the day to pass
Lord, dismiss us with thy blessing, fill our hearts
Lord Jesus, once you spoke to men
Lord, teach us how to pray aright
Lord, thy word abideth
O God, enthroned in majesty
O God of every nation
O Holy Spirit, by whose breath
O Spirit of Life, O Spirit of God
O what their joy and their glory must be
Out of the deep I call
Spread, O spread, thou mighty word
Thanks to God whose Word was spoken
The head that once was crowned with thorns
The kingdom of God is justice and joy
The love of Jesus calls us
You are salt for the earth

Creator of the starry height
Empty he came
Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard
Filled with the Spirit's power
For the healing of the nations
Forth in the peace of Christ we go
From heaven you came, helpless Babe
Glorious in majesty
God is our strength from days of old
God the Creator, you in love made me
He is Lord, he is Lord
Help us to help each other, Lord
Here is the risen Son
Holy Spirit, storm of love
How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds
If you are encouraged
Immortal love for ever full
In the name of Jesus
Jesus is the Name we honor
Jesus shall take the highest honor
Look, ye saints! the sight is glorious
May the mind of Christ my Saviour
Meekness and majesty
Name of all majesty
O Christ, the master carpenter
O for a thousand tongues to sing
O Jesus so meek, O Jesus so kind
O Lord, all the world belongs to you
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
O love, how deep, how broad, how high
Should I rehearse with human voice
Sing praise to God on mountain tops
Son of God, eternal Saviour
Take up thy cross, the Saviour said
That priceless gift
The head that once was crowned with thorns
There is a Redeemer
There's no greater name than Jesus
Thou who wast rich beyond all splendour
To the Name of our salvation
We have a gospel to proclaim
What if the One who shapes the stars
What wondrous love is this
When I survey the wondrous Cross
Where charity and love prevail
Who would ever have believed it
Ye who the name of Jesus bear
You are called to tell the story
Matthew 21:23-32 Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended
And now, O Father, mindful of the love
Ask me what great thing I know

Christ is the King, O friends rejoice
Crown him with many crowns
Dear Mother God, your wings are warm
Hark the glad sound! the Saviour comes
Guide me, O thou great Jehovah
I have a dream, a man once said
Lamb of God, to thee we raise
Let thy Blood in mercy poured
Let us with a gladsome mind
Lo, from the desert homes
Lo, in the wilderness a voice
Lord Jesus, think on me
O bless the Lord, my soul
O Jesus, I have promised
O love, how deep, how broad, how high
On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven
Rejoice, the Lord is King
Retell what Christ's great love has done
Sing alleluia to our God
Sing we the praises of the great forerunner
Teach us, O loving heart of Christ
The Church of Christ in every age
There's a wideness in God's mercy

Put peace into each other's hands
Remember your servants, Lord
Revive thy work, O Lord
Seek ye first the kingdom of God
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
The eternal gifts of Christ the King
When God restored our common life
You shall cross the barren desert
General Hymns All who believe and are baptized
Blest be the everlasting God
By every nation, race and tongue
Come away to the skies
For all the saints, who from their labours rest
For all thy saints, a noble throng
For all thy saints, O Lord
For all your saints in glory
For the bread which you have broken
For those we love within the veil
From glory to glory advancing
Give me the wings of faith to rise
Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant
Glory to thee, O God, for all thy saints
God, we praise you, God, we bless you
Hark! the sound of holy voices
Here from all nations, all tongues and all peoples
How blessed are all the saints
How bright these glorious spirits shine
In Christ, our humble head
In our day of thanksgiving
Jerusalem, my happy home
Jesus, Son of Mary
Joy and triumph everlasting
Let saints on earth in concert sing
Light a candle for thanksgiving!
Lo, round the throne, a glorious band
Lo, what a cloud of witnesses
Lord God, we give you thanks for all your saints
Lord, in our lonely hours
My God, accept my heart this day
O heavenly Jerusalem
O what their joy and their glory must be
Once to every man and nation
Praise to God for saints and martyrs
Rejoice in God's saints
Sing alleluia forth in duteous praise
Sing for God's glory
Sing we the song of those who stand
Soldiers, who are Christ's below
Ten thousand times ten thousand
Thanks be to God for his saints
The saints in Christ are one in every place
There is a land of pure delight
We are called to stand together
We sing for all the unsung saints
Who are these like stars appearing
Word of justice, alleluia
Ye holy angels bright
Ye watchers and ye holy ones

All creatures of our God and King

All things bright and beautiful
All things praise thee, Lord Most High
As those of old their first fruits brought
Before the earth had yet begun
Come, ye thankful people, come
Creating God, your fingers trace
Dance and sing
Fair waved the golden corn
For the beauty of the earth
For the fruits of his creation
Fountain of mercy, God of love
Glory, love, and praise, and honor
God in his love lent us this planet
God of all ages
God of mercy, God of grace
God who gives to life its goodness
God, who touchest earth with beauty
God, whose farm is all creation
Great is thy faithfulness
In humble gratitude
Let all creation bless the Lord
Let us with a gladsome mind

Many and great, O God, are your works
Most High, omnipotent, good Lord

O Jesus, crowned with all renown
O Lord, all the world belongs to you
O Lord of heaven and earth and sea
O worship the King, all glorious above
Praise and thanksgiving, Father, we offer
Praise for the harvest-time
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise, O praise our God and King
Praise the Lord of heaven, praise him in the height
Praise to God, immortal praise
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation
Sing praise to God on mountaintops

The gifts we bring
The spacious firmament on high
To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise
We are not our own
We plough the fields and scatter
When all thy mercies, O my God
Wind upon the waters
Within the busy rush of life
Zion, praise thy Saviour, singing
